A laser launches a optical signal into a nano-active optical fiber. The optical signal will interact with two different type of structures integrated inside the multi-material, engineered optical fiber, i.e. nano-antennas and active pigments (forming the so-called nano-active structures). 

The nano-antennas are glass nano-structures integrated inside the engineered optical fiber and that role is to give a specific directionality to the optical field from the side of the optical fiber. The 3-dimensional shape, strength and location of these nano-antennas offer the possibility to design a specific side lighting angle from few degrees up to few tens of degrees at any location along the engineered optical fiber.
